Brock Lesnar is currently on his 2nd Universal title reign. He is 80 days in. And hes only defended it once with his second title coming up at the Royal Rumble against Finn Balor. He more then likely will win and go into Wrestlemania as the champ. This is good and bad.
The Universal title has been around since August 2016. It’s had 6 champions. Two of those have been Brock. So it’s had 5 champions. Finn had it one day. So 4 champions. Kevin Owens, who held it for 188 days. Goldberg, who held it for 27 days. Roman Reigns, who would still be champion if he didn’t have to go fight Leukemia. (Go get them Roman. I’m officially a fan of you. Cancer is a bitch and I hope you overcome it brother.) and of course Brock. The point I’m trying to make is out of those 4, two were part timers and account for a little more then 70% of the titles life. That’s not good. Not when it’s suppose to be your highest title on your flagship show, RAW.
But this is also Brock Lesnar, a freak of an athlete. A big money draw. A must see attraction just about. Whenever he is on a PPV, people tune in to either see him lose, or win. He’s like Tom Brady. The people who hate him, HATE HIM and will tune in just to laugh if he loses. The people who like him (My best friend is a huge fan.) LOVE HIM, and tune in to watch Brock throw someone half his size around. I’m sure my buddy is looking forward to RR. He brings in money, one way or another, and that is why he has the title.
There are pros and cons to the Brock Lesnar title reign. Now this whole piece is opinion, as is everything I write, and I don’t expect everyone to agree. I’m a wrestling fan and writing this from that view and what I see. Let’s first break down some of the pros of Brock wearing your belt.
Pros
1. The Money draw, must see factor
Like I said earlier, Brock brings eyes. People know his name and he brings in money, and for Vince that is a big thing. Money equals more money. Vince loves money. So of course Brock wears the title. You may not like it but you still watch and thus you don’t hurt Vince’s wallet and Brock gets the title. Brock is Vince’s go to emergency, as we saw at Crown Jewel. Roman is out so Brock got the title. Until people stop tuning in, either to see Brock lose, or win, Vince will always go to him. Vince will pay more then UFC and that is why Brock is still here. Honestly, if Brock goes to UFC, that is good for everyone who is sick of him. But right now Vince sees Brock as a big dollar sign.
2. The Title is something to compete for.
This is the point some people will disagree with but I don’t like the 30 day rule. At least not for the main title. The main title should be something you earn. Not every 30 days someone new comes up to challenge. If the rule was changed to 60 days I feel the title would feel bigger. It would everyone to scramble to try and challenge for it. I don’t think this should apply to all the titles, just the big one. Defend it at the PPV, have people compete for a spot at the next PPV to become number one contender and then the following PPV another defense. Brock not being around for every PPV saves you from the lesser PPVs. 12 PPVs I think is too much, as alot are filler to get to bigger shows. You get no decisions, or bad booking choices. Now with the new rule, you make that filler PPV mean something with a number one contenders match.
3. Paul Heyman
Brock being around means more Paul Heyman. Brock being champ means Paul Heyman is turned up times 10. Paul Heyman could sell a bar of soap if he wanted to. The man is a genius on the mic and most of the time can get you hyped for a match. Yes he has fell flat sometimes but for the most part he nails it. We need more Paul soemtimes.
Cons
1. Your flagship show has no title to go after.
RAW currently has the Intercontinental title as it’s “main” title. Bobby Lashley just won it so we’ll see how that goes, but for the longest time it had Seth Rollins vs anyone as the story. Seth is one of my favorite wrestlers but event hat was growing stale. Then Dean turned heel and become a germ a phobe and that didn’t help. Dean didn’t help the title and it’s fair to wonder what Dean can really bring. He has to step it up.
This is the problem with Brock. Brock hates to travel, we all know this. And that is why having him have the main title is bad. He won’t be on every RAW and he wont even be on every RAW leading to a major PPV. MAYBE Wrestlemania. But that’s a maybe. And that hurts RAW. A Mid-card title can’t be the main title that everyone is going to. Mid-carders are not meant to carry a show (Unless this 97-01, then yea.) Which brings me to my second con.
2. You can’t make Stars when he has the title
Brock goes by the name The Beast Incarnate, which means the Beast in the flesh. Brock has been built up so big from beating the streak, to holding the title a year, that you have only a select few people that can beat him. And once someone beats him, they can get huge. WWE has a star problem. They don’t have many people who could beat him. Roman beat him at Summerslam and Goldberg at Survivor Series 2016 was his first pin in years. Those guys are also huge Beasts themselves. You can’t tell me you believe Finn Balor can beat him. Finn isn’t built up like that (Unless the Demon comes back, I’ll believe that). At this point your telling me the only people that can beat him are Goldberg (who he destroyed at WM) and Roman. Cena can’t even get a win against this guy. You have to start building up people to make you think they can win. Braun has lost to him so many times it’s hard to take him seriously when he faces Brock. It’s like Bray Wyatt and his spooky shit. You gotta win to be taken seriously or at least put up a fight.
3. His schedule.
The only time Brock can lose is really at 3 PPVs. Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam. Over the past 6 years, it is like clockwork. He appears at those 3 big shows and one minor one. And even then you can take out Royal Rumble. If he has the title there, he is gonna have it at WM. So really he is gonna lose it at two shows or not at all that year. He never wrestles on RAW cause he is rarely on it. If I was offered Brock’s money and schedule, Yeah I would take it too. But when your champion only appears 20 times a year or less, it’s a tough sell. If it was more like my 60 day rule I proposed, I’m sure people wouldn’t mind as much, especially if he made more appearances in between the defenses.
Look I like Brock. I always get hyped when he is on the show and wrestling. I love watching him throw around people. SUPLEX CITY BITCH. But I also know a problem when I see it and WWE hasn’t been great this past year. We are entering Wrestlemania season and I know he will be champ. I don’t mind, but I also think some things need to change if he is gonna be champ. Now the rumor is Seth is beating him for the title and if that is true, it’s the right step. Seth is not Roman and WWE could turn the ship around and make other stars around Seth if he has the title. But if Brock signs a new deal and Vince decides to wait it out for Roman to come back, then we will be back to square one like last year, and that is something WWE doesn’t want. Use Brock in other places, without the belt. You’ll get the same impact, people will tune in. But RAW will have it’s title back on a consistent basis and they need that right now.
Or maybe the Demon will come back Sunday and we won’t have to worry anymore. One can dream.
